Discover the tunes of the Pride Lands: The Lion King's top songs at the West End

Madhushree

The Lion King has been amassing fans since the animated film came out in 1994. It has also left its mark as a West End musical at the Lyceum Theatre, with its incredible puppetry and soundtrack. Created by Elton John, Tim Rice, Lebo M, Hans Zimmer and more, the musical has several new additions to the original soundtrack. Multiple tracks are wholly or partially sung in African languages, adding a layer of authenticity to the beloved story. Although the entire soundtrack is fantastic from start to finish, a select few steal the show. So, here are The Lion King's top songs.

Circle of Life

The musical's grand opening number, Circle of Life, transports audiences to the Pride Lands as King Mufasa and Queen Sarabi welcome their new cub, Simba. The majestic gathering of diverse animal puppets on stage and larger-than-life harmonies will move you to tears!

I Just Can't Wait to Be King

Simba's youthful spirit takes centre stage in I Just Can't Wait to Be King, where he shares his dreams of ruling the land without any constraints. This classic upbeat number, with its moments of humour and intricate instrumentals, will get you grooving in your seat.

Chow Down

Enter villains! As Simba and Nala venture into forbidden lands, they encounter the menacing hyenas Shenzi, Banzai, and Ed in Chow Down. This rock-and-roll headbanger perfectly captures the thrilling encounter that adds an element of danger to the musical.

They Live in You

In a poignant father-son moment, Mufasa imparts a crucial lesson to Simba about obedience and discipline in They Live in You. Stripping away the regal facade, Mufasa emphasizes his role as a father in this moving, soulful ballad, backed by soft chants of a choir.

Hakuna Matata

Simba's journey leads him to the carefree duo Timon and Pumbaa, who introduce him to the philosophy of Hakuna Matata. This catchy Swahili phrase translates to no worries. This catchy, fun number soon becomes Simba's new anthem for his carefree lifestyle.

Honourable Mentions

The Lion Sleeps TonightCan You Feel the Lion Tonight, and King of Pride Rock contribute to the musical's overall brilliance, each adding its unique flavour to the Pride Lands' rich musical tapestry.
