Wicked is based on Gregory Maguire's 1995 novel, which reimagines the world of L. Frank Baum's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz from the perspective of Elphaba, the future Wicked Witch of the West. With music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and a book by Winnie Holzman, the musical opened on Broadway in 2003 before arriving in London's West End on September 27, 2006. Now in its 20th year in London, with celebrations planned for September 26–27, 2026, Wicked has become the 9th longest-running production in West End history, seen by over 13 million people across more than 7,000 performances. Directed by Joe Mantello, the production remains one of musical theater's most honored works, having won 3 Tony Awards, 2 Olivier Awards, and a Grammy.

Storyline

Set long before Dorothy’s journey through Oz, Wicked follows Glinda, the popular blonde witch, and Elphaba, the green-skinned outcast with extraordinary powers. Their paths cross at university, where rivalry soon grows into an unexpected bond. As politics, magic, and ambition intervene, the women find themselves on diverging destinies, one celebrated as the “Good Witch” and the other feared as “Wicked.” With its exploration of prejudice, power, and personal choice, the Wicked musical in London takes audiences on an emotional journey that reveals the true story behind the legends of Oz.

The Apollo Victoria Theatre first opened in 1930 as a cinema. The cinema was converted into a musical theater venue in 1981 with the opening of The Sound of Music. This was followed by many other massive musical productions, including Saturday Night Fever and Fiddler on the Roof. In 2006, the Apollo Victoria became the home of Wicked, where it has played ever since. The interiors of the theater feature a beautiful Art Deco design complemented by subtle accent lighting to create the effect of a secret underwater cavern.

Magnificent. The cast is wonderful, the orchestra is impressive. It’s incredible how everything conveys so much—it gives you goosebumps every five minutes: the voices, the atmosphere, the sets, the dance numbers... It flies by even though it lasts over 2 hours (there’s an intermission between the two acts). HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Coming to London and not seeing WICKED is unforgivable.
