Wicked is based on Gregory Maguire's 1995 novel, which reimagines the world of L. Frank Baum's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz from the perspective of Elphaba, the future Wicked Witch of the West. With music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and a book by Winnie Holzman, the musical opened on Broadway in 2003 before arriving in London's West End on September 27, 2006. Now in its 20th year in London, with celebrations planned for September 26–27, 2026, Wicked has become the 9th longest-running production in West End history, seen by over 13 million people across more than 7,000 performances. Set long before Dorothy’s journey through Oz, Wicked follows Glinda, the popular blonde witch, and Elphaba, the green-skinned outcast with extraordinary powers. The Apollo Victoria Theatre first opened in 1930 as a cinema. The cinema was converted into a musical theater venue in 1981 with the opening of The Sound of Music. This was followed by many other massive musical productions, including Saturday Night Fever and Fiddler on the Roof.
