Storyline

The show begins as Dwight and Shirley are preparing to bury their mother. As they work through this, they recall their childhoods in Chapeltown, Leeds, in the 1980s. Dwight was struggling to cope as a young black man who suffered from autism, and Shirley was fighting tooth and nail for her freedom, battling unreasonable expectations at home and in the classroom.

They grew up in a society where racial profiling, police violence, and poverty were commonplace. The struggle to stay alive tore apart their family. Now it is down to them as adults to cobble together their fractured memories and move ahead together.
