Rough Magic spells fun: Exclusive interview with Rosemarie Akwafo

Akanksha Panicker

As Rough Magic casts its spell on audiences with its unique blend of Shakespeare, sorcery, and sharp humour, we caught up with Rosemarie Akwafo, who plays the lovable trickster Nona, for an exclusive chat about magic on and off the stage.

Eerie magic at Shakespeare's Globe

Rough Magic takes place in the eerie aftermath of the so-called “Macbeth Incident,” in the richly atmospheric Sam Wanamaker Playhouse. The show brings together witches, fairies, ghosts, and even shapeshifters in an immersive, musical romp—where the audience becomes apprentice guardians of destiny

Exclusive interview: Rosemarie Akwafo on Rough Magic

Rosemarie Akwafo—who trained at Rose Bruford College, and brings credits from Peter Pan Goes Wrong to A Midsummer Night’s Dream—describes Nona as a “lovely, warm-hearted but mischievous apprentice witch” whose earnest meddling shifts the fate of Macbeth and the supernatural order alike.

1. Who’s your favourite Shakespeare character of all time?

"Hermia!"
A feisty, passionate dreamer caught in a chaotic love triangle—what’s not to adore?

2. If you weren’t playing Nona in Rough Magic, which role would you have wanted to play instead?

Puck.
“There’s a lot of fun to be had in that role,” Rosemarie shares. “And you get to be part of Henry’s song, which is one of my favourites!”

3. How do you prepare for a new role? Did your approach shift for this show?

“My first step is always understanding the plot and getting to know my character. But Rough Magic started as a Research & Development process, so this time we began by building the world of the play—and figuring out how Macbeth’s story intertwines with ours.”

4. Is there a particular scene or moment you’re especially proud of?

“I loved working with our magician, John Bulleid, to create some magical tricks for the show. But honestly, one of my favourite moments is when we get the entire audience to freeze. It’s electric!”

5. Any personal touches you brought to Nona?

“Definitely. I’m the youngest in my family, so I know a thing or two about mischief—and getting into trouble!”

6. What’s one thing you absolutely love, and one thing you dislike, about theatre?

“I love that it’s live. Every audience is different, and you never know how they’ll react—especially young people! The one thing I don’t love? Phones ringing in the middle of a scene.”

7. What’s been your most cherished memory behind the scenes?

“Being nominated for an Olivier and going to the awards with my fellow witches and creative team. That moment will stay with me forever.”

8. Did the team have any rituals or playful prep to get into the zone?

“Oh yes! We did lots of improv—imagining our characters in everyday human situations. It led to some hilarious scenes, but also gave us deeper insight into the world we were building.”

9. What should audiences take away from Rough Magic?

“That it’s not about the mistakes you make—it’s what you choose to do next that really matters.”

10. Any easter eggs or hidden gems fans should watch for?

“We’ve peppered in lots of references to other Shakespeare plays—especially Macbeth and The Tempest. Keep your ears open!”

Between the tricks, the turns, and the timeless Shakespearean nods, Rosemarie’s portrayal of Nona is equal parts heart and hilarity. Whether you’re a seasoned Bard buff or new to the world of witches and wonder, Rough Magic is an unforgettable ride—especially when the cast freezes time.
