Based on Gregory Maguire’s novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, the musical was adapted by Winnie Holzman with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz. Directed by Joe Mantello, the London production has been enchanting audiences since 2006 at the Apollo Victoria Theatre. Behind the curtain, the award-winning creative team features Susan Hilferty’s Tony-winning costumes, Eugene Lee’s scenic design, and Kenneth Posner’s lighting, all combining to deliver a spectacular stage experience. With themes of friendship, identity, and the blurred lines between good and evil, Wicked continues to resonate with audiences worldwide. The Grammy Award-winning soundtrack, stunning visuals, and critical recognition, including ten WhatsOnStage Awards for Best West End Show, ensure its legacy as a modern classic.
Set long before Dorothy’s journey through Oz, Wicked follows Glinda, the popular blonde witch, and Elphaba, the green-skinned outcast with extraordinary powers. Their paths cross at university, where rivalry soon grows into an unexpected bond. As politics, magic, and ambition intervene, the women find themselves on diverging destinies, one celebrated as the “Good Witch” and the other feared as “Wicked.” With its exploration of prejudice, power, and personal choice, the Wicked musical in London takes audiences on an emotional journey that reveals the true story behind the legends of Oz.

The Apollo Victoria Theatre first opened in 1930 as a cinema. The cinema was converted into a musical theater venue in 1981 with the opening of The Sound of Music. This was followed by many other massive musical productions, including Saturday Night Fever and Fiddler on the Roof. In 2006, the Apollo Victoria became the home of Wicked, where it has played ever since. The interiors of the theater feature a beautiful Art Deco design complemented by subtle accent lighting to create the effect of a secret underwater cavern.

Saw the performance in Nashville as part of the Broadway series. The performance at the Apollo was far superior The sets were amazing in ways that cannot be replicated in a traveling show. The actors were so very talented and their voices memorizing. One of the best parts of our London trip.
Insane atmosphere, the whole show is absolutely eye catching and dynamic, the stage is almost its own entity, everything is incredibly alive and colorful, brings a tear to the eye. The cast is absolutelly stunning and talented, not a single bad perfomance on stage or back stage
The show is interesting, but the story is hard to follow if, like me, you don't know anything about it before coming. I found it a bit long compared to other musicals and the songs in this one. It's best to see it with kids.
