A Midsummer Night’s Dream was penned by Shakespeare in the late 1500s. The play is notable for its many interconnecting subplots that all center around the wedding of Duke Theseus of Athens and the Amazon queen Hippolyta, with a bulk of the play taking place in Fairyland, creating plenty of room for the set and costume design to get experimental and fantastical. The play is also noted for being crafted such that the audience often feels like "vicarious participants in an aristocratic festival from which they were physically excluded" (David Wiles, University of London), making its staging at the Bridge Theatre the most authentic way to experience this work.
The town's abuzz as the wedding of Theseus and Hippolyta approaches. With just four days left, there is much to do, most notably getting the merry band of amateur actors ready to perform a play. As the day approaches, a vexed Egeus laments to Theseus that his pick as his daughter Hermia's suitor, Demetrius, has failed to win her heart, which instead lies with Lysander. Determined to marry, the duo escape to the forest, with Demetrius hot on their trail, and his secret admirer Helena on his. But the quartet aren't alone, for in the woods resides the Fairy King and Queen whose marital strife is about to become everybody's problem.
