Matilda Feyiṣayọ Ibini, a celebrated playwright and screenwriter with Nigerian ancestry from London, is the writer of Sleepova. Theatres like Sphinx Theatre, English Touring Theatre, Soho Theatre, BBC Writersroom and more have all hosted Matilda as a playwright in residence. BurntOut Theatre staged her first piece, Muscovado, which earned the Alfred Fagon Audience Award in 2015. Jade Lewis will direct the play, with casting by Jatinder Chera. Cara Evans is the set and costume designer, while Pete Rickards is the production manager.
The Story
The four friends Rey, Elle, Shan, and Funmi share a unique connection. Their sleepovers are a symbol of their strong friendship and a treasured safe place where they can come together and completely be themselves in the halcyon years of their youth, filled with delicious sweets, school secrets, and questions only they know the answers to. Unfortunately, growing older is a natural part of life, and as adulthood confronts them year after year, their youthful ambitions and dreams appear farther and farther away.
