Storyline

‘The Empress’ follows the story of Rani Das, a 16-year-old Indian nursemaid, who arrives at Tilbury docks in 1887 to start a new life in Britain. Along the way, she befriends a lascar, an Indian politician, and a royal servant. Their intertwined journeys beautifully unravel against the backdrop of Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee. This captivating narrative takes you through the trials and tribulations faced by Indian ayahs and lascars during the 'Golden Era' of the Empire, whilst also highlighting the first Indian elected as a Member of Parliament in Britain.
