Rona Munro's political thriller Mary premieres at Hampstead Theatre, London. Munro won the Evening Standard and Writers’ Guild of Great Britain Awards in 2014. Mary stars Douglas Henshall, Rona Morison, and Brian Vernel.
Mary at Hampstead Theatre will be directed by Roxana Silbert, who has previously directed Munro's plays Iron and Little Eagles. The stage design is by Ashley Martin-Davis, lighting is by Matt Haskins, composition and sound design is by Nick Powell, movement is by Ayse Tashkiran, casting is by Helena Palmer, and assistant director is Marlie Haco.
Storyline
"Mary" refers to Mary Stuart, Queen of Scots, the troubled ruler of Scotland during the time period in which the play takes place. The play is set in 1567. The story focuses on James Melville, the Queen's loyal, charismatic, and intelligent diplomat who steered her through the dangers of her turbulent rule. The story revolves around whom James Melville can trust, who is guilty, who is innocent, and who is too hazardous to be accused.

The Hampstead Theatre is a London West End theatre in Covent Garden, the City of Westminster. The Hampstead Theatre seats 2,196 people over four levels: Stalls, Royal Circle, Grand Circle, and Balcony. The Hampstead Theatre , as it stands today was designed by Benjamin Dean Wyatt for the Whitbread committee, and was built in 1812. It has hosted diverse actors such as Shakespearean actor Edmund Kean, child actress Clara Fisher, comedian Dan Leno, the comedy group Monty Python (who recorded a concert album there), and musical composer and performer Ivor Novello. The theatre had first opened with a production of Hamlet. Today, the theatre is owned by Andrew Lloyd Webber and occasionally hosts popular musical theatre performances.
