Why Watch Jitney?
Get a glimpse into the post-Vietnam and racially segregated America in the 1970s through August Wilson’s play.
Wilson brings out something deeply profound by portraying the mundane lives of eight unlicensed cab drivers beautifully onstage.
Watch the story of working-class jitney drivers unfold on stage where they are presented as well-rounded human beings with all their complexities and passions and no glorification.
The relationship between these eight men is explored and examined as they go on about loving their lives and working hard at their job as jitney drivers, making this play quite a captivating watch.
Pulitzer Prize and Olivier Award-winning American playwright August Wilson's Jitney is coming to London's Old Vic Theatre after a successful run at Leeds Playhouse for a short period of one month. A talented cast and skillful direction serve to create a powerful impact. Set in a racially segregated post-Vietnam America of the 1970s, the play revolves around the day-to-day lives of eight drivers of the Jitney station. The unlicensed jitneys drive the people regular taxis ignore to places regular taxis will not venture to. The show will only be playing at the Old Vic for one month, so secure your tickets now (selling out fast!) to watch an exceptional cast take to stage.
Storyline
What makes the unlicensed or jitney cabs special is that they’ll take you where your regular cabs and cab drivers refuse to go. They transport passengers to locations where regular taxis will not go. Jim Becker and his entourage of unlicensed drivers transport residents of Pittsburgh's Hill District to their choice of destinations, no matter where it is. The jitney station's workers work to heal old wounds while also encountering new ones at their work and personal lives.
August Wilson's compelling modern classic examines the personal and work relationships between eight men as they live and work in a post-Vietnam America.
