Why Watch Bad Jews?

  • If you love having a good laugh, then Bad Jews is a must-watch for you.

  • Bad Jews a dark-comedy play has made a mark in the classic Jewish family comedy genre.

  • So, if you're looking to watch a comic play about a family, this is the one for you. It's a savage and biting comedy about family, faith, and relationships.

  • The play was nominated for the Outer Critics Circle Award in 2012-2013 and the Off-Broadway Alliance Award in 2014. It received the Lucille Lortel Awards in 2014.

  • The play Bad Jews cleverly raises questions about family relationships, legacy, the morality of interfaith marriages, and cultural assimilation under the garb of comedy and it is surely a riot to watch it all unfold.

Bad Jews has returned to London Theatre after two record-breaking sessions at the West End.

The play Bad Jews by Joshua Harmon is a dark comedy. Harmon was inspired to write the play after attending a service when Holocaust survivors' grandchildren were invited to speak at the event. Jon Pashley directs the play.

Storyline

The night after their grandfather's burial, three cousins have a verbal (and sometimes non-verbal!) altercation that starts out over a family heirloom but soon turns into a dispute about their faiths, interfaith romances, and even accusations about cultural assimilation fly around. In one corner of the crowded Manhattan apartment stands Daphna Feygenbaum, a feisty, self-assured, and stubborn "Real Jew”. Her cousin Liam, a secular and entitled young man who is accompanied by his sweetheart Melody (a non-Jew), is in the other corner. Liam's brother, Jonah, is caught in the middle and attempts to stay out of it. A brutal and hilarious struggle over family, faith, and legacy erupts when their beloved grandfather leaves the precious heirloom behind.

Arts Theatre

The Arts Theatre opened its doors on 20 April 1927, offering something delightfully different from the usual West End fare. Originally a members-only club (to dodge the Lord Chamberlain's censorship), it quickly became a hub for experimental and avant-garde productions, joining the ranks of theatres like Hampstead Everyman and the Gate. Fast forward a few decades, and this cozy spot is now the West End’s smallest commercial theatre, still championing quirky, daring performances. If you're after an intimate show that breaks the mold, the Arts Theatre is your go-to. Arts Theatre seating plan will help you find the best seats in the theatre.
