The theatre opened its doors on December 17th, 1888, originally specialising in musical productions. Designed by the renowned architect C.J. Phipps for producer Henry Leslie, it has a seating capacity of 991. The light opera Dorothy, whose profits were used to build this theatre, was relocated from its previous site to inaugurate it.
