Matilda The Musical, London, staged at the Cambridge Theatre, is the Royal Shakespeare Company’s Olivier-winning adaptation of Roald Dahl’s classic novel. Written by Dennis Kelly with original songs by comedian and composer Tim Minchin, it tells the story of an extraordinary little girl who dares to change her destiny. The production first opened with the RSC in Stratford-upon-Avon in 2010 before transferring to the West End in 2011 and later making its Broadway debut in 2013.

This record-breaker has collected over 100 international awards, including a record seven Olivier Awards in 2012 and five Tony Awards on Broadway. Rob Howell’s inventive set design, combined with Peter Darling’s dynamic choreography, transforms the stage into a whimsical yet defiant world where oversized props, playful lighting, and clever staging match the show’s sharp humour and heartfelt moments.

Since its debut, the musical has been performed on stages worldwide and inspired a 2022 Netflix film adaptation starring Emma Thompson, Lashana Lynch, Stephen Graham, and Alisha Weir. Songs like When I Grow Up, Naughty, and Revolting Children have become modern musical theatre staples.

    Storyline

At the heart of Matilda The Musical, London is Matilda Wormwood, a bright, book-loving girl with a fierce sense of justice. Born into a family that undervalues her, she finds solace in stories and the encouragement of a kind teacher. Life at school, however, is ruled by the fearsome Miss Trunchbull, whose cruel methods keep students in line.

Armed with intelligence, courage, and an imagination far beyond her years, Matilda decides it is time to stand up for herself and those around her. Along the way, she discovers that even the smallest person can spark the biggest change. But how far will she go to set things right, and what surprises lie in store when she does?

Couldn't see the entire stage, it wasn't explicitly clear that parts of the stage would be blocked due to the safety railing until AFTER I had already purchased the tickets

The show was dazzling and the staging totally insane. The actors gave colorful and impressive performances, with a special mention for Mrs Honey's actress.
