Here’s what we think: Review by Headout

The musical adaptation of Robert Zemeckis's beloved 1985 time-travel movie is an absolute delight, capturing the larky spirit of the original while expanding it into a standalone stage production. The efforts of director John Rando, choreographer Chris Bailey, and designer Tim Hatley shine through, delivering an excellent slice of entertainment.

"It is, in other words, the same as the film, with only a few minor plot changes (the whole thing about Doc getting on the wrong side of some Libyan terrorists is the most obvious and – let’s be honest – sensible casualty).

But the means by which Rando’s production goes about telling the story is quite different. Every scene is a showstopper, bedaubed with backing dancers and Tim Hatley’s ever-changing, retina-searing sets. It’s a relentless rush, with almost no breathing space, and it feels heavily predicated on the idea that you already know Marty from the film, where his character is eased in far more gradually.”

"The car is the undoubted star of this musical version of the much-loved 1985 movie. It arrives on stage in a flash of blue light, and every time it reappears, it roars, it soars, and burns up the streets of Tim Hatley's stunning designs which cleverly combine sets, backdrops and electronics."

"And yes, the car is a star too: that iconic DeLorean roaring onto the stage and accelerating to 88 miles per hour to blast through time (if petrol is a bust, perhaps we should all switch to plutonium). The audience is totally immersed in that thrilling ride thanks to a crack creative team (Tim Hatley, Tim Lutkin, Gareth Owen, Finn Ross, and Chris Fisher) and it even extends into the auditorium, with strips of LED lights creating a giant fizzing circuit board. There's also a climactic trick that I genuinely can't explain. Theatre magic: how I've missed it."

It is an unforgettable experience. The cast delivered a realistic atmosphere, making you feeling like you are part of the story. The chandelier is a statement on it's own. It's worth spending a penny and have a good seat. We took the Royal Cirle Row B seat 20/21. It is central and you can view all the stage.

The performance was top notch! The acting, the singing and dancing, the whole package carried us along even with a slightly different storyline. The audience really flowed with the performance, we were all clapping and cheering several times during the show. Very well coordinated performance. Although my seat was far from the stage, I thoroughly enjoyed it.

This was a sparkling example of the British theatrical tradition. Superb performances were matched by a wonderful setting; the old London County Council chamber made an excellent courtroom. I loved how 12 patrons became the trial jurors, playing their impromptu roles convincingly.
