Set in America’s South during the nineteenth century, Midnight follows Rail (played by Todrick Hall), whose personal journey of love, servitude and self-determination unfolds in the shadow of entrenched social divisions. The production is fully sung-through, with no spoken dialogue, and features a score that spans gospel, R&B, folk, opera, rock and classic musical-theatre styles. Running at Sadler’s Wells East for a limited run, this marks the first public workshop performances of the show.
In the nineteenth-century American South, Rail is owned by Scarlet but becomes chosen to work alongside Richard and his brother, a shift that opens new pathways, unexpected bonds and forbidden desires. Rail’s growing closeness to both Lily Rose and Richard challenges the roles society, race and class have assigned him, forcing him and those around him to confront the consequences of violence, ownership and identity. As the narrative progresses and a brutal attack forces a reckoning, the story presses the question: when life gives you a role, can you choose how to play it?
