Nathan Detroit, a Manhattan gambler who urgently needs to find a new venue for his craps shooting games. He receives help from Sky Masterson, who decides to aid Nathan and bases their agreement on a wager. Nathan bets that Sky will not be able to go on a date with the woman of his choice. However, Nathan chooses Sarah Brown, a pious missionary woman. Miss Adelaide, Nathan's companion and long-term fiancée, wants to put an end to the gambling antics so they can wed.
