The Story

Benjamin Britten tried to throw light on the gloom and struggles of the Monarch - the Queen at her most vulnerable yet strongest times in his eighth opera which was written in 1953 and performed in the same year at the Royal Opera House, Convent Garden.

The opera takes you back to England around the 1600s, it depicts in detail the tortuous relationship between Queen Elizabeth I and the Earl of Essex. How they started their relationship as friends, then confidantes, and because of the evil plans of the Earl and his scheme of replacing the Queen, she goes on to sign the death warrant of the Earl. The grand opera becomes rhythmic and energetic in its ceremonial sections and then turns to become poignant in certain sections such as Essex’s Lute Songs.
