One of the smallest proscenium-based theatres in the West End, the Duchess Theatre was designed by Ewen Barr. He fought back against the many challenges of the unorthodox-shaped site to design a moderately successful theatre. The Duchess Theatre opened in November 1929 with a production of Hubert Griffith’s Tunnel Trench.
