Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning playwright Tracy Letts (August: Osage County) returns with Mary Page Marlowe, a bold, time-jumping portrait of one woman’s life, told through 11 non-linear scenes spanning seven decades. Oscar winner Susan Sarandon (Dead Man Walking, Thelma & Louise) makes her long-awaited London stage debut as Mary, alongside Oscar nominee Andrea Riseborough (To Leslie, Matilda the Musical), returning to the theatre after 15 years. They are joined by a multi-actress cast, with five performers portraying Mary at different ages. The play premiered at Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theatre in 2016 and later played Off-Broadway in 2018, earning widespread acclaim for its innovative structure and emotional depth. Now, Mary Page Marlowe receives its UK premiere at The Old Vic under the direction of Artistic Director Matthew Warchus. The auditorium is reimagined in a fully in-the-round configuration, creating a unique 360° theatrical immersive experience.
Mary Page Marlowe is an accountant from Dayton, Ohio, a seemingly ordinary woman living a quiet life with two children. But beneath the surface lies a lifetime of choices that are anything but simple. Across 11 non-linear scenes, we meet Mary at different ages, each moment revealing another layer: a painful divorce, a DUI, an affair, a breakdown. Pulitzer Prize winner Tracy Letts paints a portrait of a woman shaped by impulse, circumstance, and time, one who often keeps her secrets even from herself.
