The Story

Richard Wagner’s The Valkyrie is based on Norse Mythology and follows the story of two separated twins, Siegmund and Sieglinde. They meet by chance, fall in love, and evoke the wrath of the gods. Wotan, the leader of gods, orders his daughter, Valkyrie Brünnhilde, to defend his mortal son Siegmund against his battle with Hunding, Sieglind’s husband. However, Fricka, Wotan’s wife and the goddess of marriage chastises him for siding with the wrong party and not defending the marriage rights of Hunding.

Wotan is forced to submit to her wife’s wishes and orders Valkyrie to help Hunding instead. However, Valkyrie disobeys and saves Sieglinde and her child after Siegmund is killed in the fight. Feeling betrayed, Wotan sentences Valkyrie to become a mortal woman and lie in sleep. She obeys but asks to be surrounded by a wall of fire that can be overcome only by the bravest man. Wotan gladly accepts.
