A revival of Martin McDonagh’s 2003 play, which won the New York Drama Critics’ Circle award and the Olivier award, The Pillowman raises difficult questions. Can stories be used to incite violence? Is there a threshold between reality and fiction and how do we find it? Is it worthwhile to live a life of despair and horror?
Matthew Dunster, known for directing A Very Very Very Dark Matter and Hangmen (also written by Martin McDonagh), is the director of the first notable reproduction of the esteemed British-Irish playwright's explosive and savagely comic Olivier Award-winning drama The Pillowman. Olivier award-winner Anna Fleischle is the set and costume designer for the production. Neil Austin handles the lightning design while Ian Dickinson creates the sound design.
The Pillowman is a black comedy and is regarded as one of the best plays of the last 25 years. The play explores the place of the artist in society and questions what price we are willing to pay for the freedom of speech and expression. Authorities interrogate a writer in a totalitarian society when a string of homicides seems to have some connection to her short stories. Is this a case of art mimicking life or is something more nefarious at work here? Book your The Pillowman tickets now to see this play from the best seats in the theatre.
