The Glow is a strange mix of sci-fi, folk myth and elegy for humanity. Set up in good old-fashioned Victorian days it portrays the spooky spiritualism and misuse of supernatural powers. It also talks about how women are treated and have been treated through time.
The show includes a splendid team of artists like Rakie Ayola as the spiritualist medium and Ria Zmitrowicz as a locked woman in the asylum. Further, it has been directed by Vicky Featherstone and written by Alistair McDowall. McDowall has emerged as the most exciting playwright in the last few years. He won the Bruntwood Prize for Playwriting in 2011 for his play Brilliant Adventures, which gave him a breakthrough in his writing career.
The story starts in an 1863 dark windowless asylum with a muted woman clueless of her name and life. Mrs Lyall, a spiritualist medium, on a hunt for passive conduit finds a woman without a name as the ideal candidate. However, as the woman's past begins to emerge, so do her new powers, and neither is prepared for what is about to happen.
It's an extraordinary watch that'll pull the rug from under you. At times it is funny and humorous while at others its brutality over women will leave you in misery. Escape this year and delve into the realms of old fashion mysticism.
