The Story

Professor Bernhardi, a 1912 drama by Arthur Schnitzler, is the inspiration for the Doctor play. The original drama examines the care of a lady who develops sepsis following an abortion. The Doctor, released nearly a century later, tells a similar scenario. This time, instead of Vienna, the story is set in north London, and it follows Professor Ruth Woolf, a distinguished physician who is treating a young girl with dementia when the girl's parents send a priest to perform the final rites. This presents the doctor with a major moral issue, which quickly escalates into a national controversy. The Doctor, by Robert Icke, modernizes a classic story by putting it in a modern hospital, while simultaneously raising questions about people's basic ideas on self, perspective, and prejudice.
