Why watch The 39 Steps?

  • The 39 Steps is coming to the West End as a parody of Alfred Hitchcock's film, packed with physical comedy and witty dialogue.
  • Imagine a train journey to Scotland and a car chase with fake policemen – all brought to life with clever staging.
  • Join Richard Hannay, an ordinary man thrust into a world of spies in this fast-paced whodunnit, previous revivals of which have won 2 Tonys.
  • With a nod to Hitchcock through a silhouette cameo and a Psycho-inspired shower scene, the production keeps audiences on the edge of their seats.

Nicola Samer directs this revival of The 39 Steps, adapting Patrick Barlow's Tony and Drama Desk award-winning adaptation. Barlow's original concept takes inspiration from John Buchan's 1915 novel and Alfred Hitchcock's 1935 film adaptation, weaving them together with a healthy dose of humor. The result is a hilarious, fast-paced production that relies on clever staging and minimal props. Expect to see the 4-person cast transform into over 150 characters with quick costume changes and witty accents.

Picture this: a bored Richard Hannay, yearning for excitement, gets entangled in a world of espionage after a mysterious woman falls into his lap and is then murdered in his flat. Framed for the crime, he's forced to flee, becoming a fugitive on the run. As he races across the Scottish moors and beyond, he encounters a cast of quirky characters, from a seductive femme fatale to a pair of bumbling policemen who may not be what they seem. But can he unravel the mystery of the 39 Steps before it's too late? Book tickets to watch in London to find out if Hannay cracks the code of this international spy ring!
