A part of Philip Glass’ Portrait Trilogy, Satyagraha is a 1979 opera that comprises three acts. It is the second part of the Trilogy opera that focuses on the men who changed the world including Einstein and Akhnaten. Phelim Dermott’s opera was first staged in 2007 and is a visual treat for all.
It follows the story of Gandhi during his time in South Africa and his use of non-violent protests as a political tool. The staging with the minimalist score creates a mesmerizing effect setting it apart from traditional opera.
The production features a talented cast including Sean Panikkar as Gandhi (who is convincing and charming), bass-baritone Musa Ngqungwana playing the role of Krishna, and Harewood Artist William Thomas as Rustomji. We will also see Carolyn Kuan, an outstanding conductor, making her debut for ENO.
Trust me, this is a masterpiece that you don’t want to miss out on. Book your tickets right now for this amazing limited-run production in autumn!
Satyagraha is the second part of Glass’ Portrait Trilogy that follows the early life of Gandhi in South Africa. It shows how Gandhi developed his idea of nonviolent protests as a political tool to change the world as we know it. Satyagraha means ‘Truth Force’ in Sanskrit. The entire performance is in this ancient language with no subtitles for authenticity.
The opera is semi-narrative and divided into three acts. The first two acts have three scenes while the third act has a single continuous scene. Each act has a prominent historical figure who overlooks the scene from above. The Russian author Leo Tolstoy is a part of Act I, Rabindranath Tagore is the prominent figure in Act II while civil rights leader, Martin King Luther Jr., takes the lead in Act III.
