Based on Raymond Briggs’ 1978 picture book and the 1982 Channel 4 animation, The Snowman musical in London brings the story to life through dance, imagery and Howard Blake’s atmospheric score, with Walking in the Air as a central moment. The version at Peacock Theatre, presented by Birmingham Rep and Sadler’s Wells, has evolved since its 1993 revival and been staging at Sadler’s Wells' West End venue since 1997. Directed by Bill Alexander with choreography by Robert North and design by Ruari Murchison, the production uses aerial harnesses for flying scenes and falling "snow" in the auditorium for immersive effect.
Set on a snowy winter’s night, a young boy named James in the TV adaptation, builds a snowman who comes magically to life. Through imaginative sequences set in his home and toy-filled rooms, the pair take flight across the starry sky and journey to the North Pole in a world transformed by dance and music. Along the way they meet magical characters including a Snow Princess, Father Christmas, Jack Frost and a troupe of international snowmen, with playful scenes ranging from fruit limbo contests to tango dances. As Walking in the Air lifts them into the clouds, audiences sense both the thrill and the gentle poignancy of their friendship. Discover how their adventure ends and what awaits when the snow melts—book tickets to The Snowman London musical to find out.
