Why watch Sing Street?

  • Based on John Carney’s cult classic film, Sing Street takes you straight to 1980s Dublin, where a group of scrappy teens form a band to escape their troubles
  • Tony Award-winner Rebecca Taichman (Indecent) and Enda Walsh, who turned Once into a Tony-winning sensation, bring their magic to this electrifying stage adaptation.
  • Scored by Gary Clark (Danny Wilson), inspired by pure 80s rock, get ready for synth-heavy tunes that will make you nostalgic for an era you may not have even lived through
  • After sell-out runs at New York Theatre Workshop and Huntington Theatre in Boston, this new UK production lands in London for its next act.
  • “Sing Street exudes a riotous, soaring joy” (The Stage), so plug in your amps for a punk-powered love letter to misfits and music lovers everywhere.

Before Sing Street rocked the stage, it was a 2016 cult-classic film from the mind of John Carney (Once, Begin Again), earning critical acclaim and a Golden Globe nomination for Best Motion Picture.

Tony-winning playwright Enda Walsh (Once) adapted the screenplay, while Rebecca Taichman (Indecent), one of only six women to win a Tony for Best Direction of a Play, brought its rebellious spirit to life. With music by Gary Clark (Danny Wilson) and Carney, the show pulses with new wave, post-punk music. The stage adaptation debuted at the New York Theatre Workshop in 2019 and later at the Huntington Theatre in Boston. From The Commitments to School of Rock, Sing Street carries the history of all the teenage punks and their musical weapons.

Storyline

Dublin, 1982. Life is pretty bleak for 16-year-old Conor: his family is crumbling, his new school is brutal, and he just can’t seem to fit in. Then he sees Raphina, who is mysterious, stylish, and way out of his league. He does what any self-respecting teenager would do—he tells her he’s in a band. There’s just one problem: he doesn’t actually have a band.

But with a little help from his misfit friends, some stolen rehearsal time, and a deep love of 80s music, Conor sets out to write his way into Raphina’s heart. What starts as a ridiculous plan turns into something bigger: an escape, a passion, and a dream worth chasing.
