Before Sing Street rocked the stage, it was a 2016 cult-classic film from the mind of John Carney (Once, Begin Again), earning critical acclaim and a Golden Globe nomination for Best Motion Picture.
Tony-winning playwright Enda Walsh (Once) adapted the screenplay, while Rebecca Taichman (Indecent), one of only six women to win a Tony for Best Direction of a Play, brought its rebellious spirit to life. With music by Gary Clark (Danny Wilson) and Carney, the show pulses with new wave, post-punk music. The stage adaptation debuted at the New York Theatre Workshop in 2019 and later at the Huntington Theatre in Boston. From The Commitments to School of Rock, Sing Street carries the history of all the teenage punks and their musical weapons.
Dublin, 1982. Life is pretty bleak for 16-year-old Conor: his family is crumbling, his new school is brutal, and he just can’t seem to fit in. Then he sees Raphina, who is mysterious, stylish, and way out of his league. He does what any self-respecting teenager would do—he tells her he’s in a band. There’s just one problem: he doesn’t actually have a band.
But with a little help from his misfit friends, some stolen rehearsal time, and a deep love of 80s music, Conor sets out to write his way into Raphina’s heart. What starts as a ridiculous plan turns into something bigger: an escape, a passion, and a dream worth chasing.
First opening its doors in 1888, the Lyric Hammersmith Theatre's Frank Matcham-designed auditorium was dismantled and rebuilt brick by brick in the 1970s to save it from demolition. The Lyric is now housed within a sleek glass-and-steel complex that fuses Victorian elegance with modern design. Over the decades, the Lyric has been home to some of the most groundbreaking and beloved productions in British theatre. Michael Frayn’s Noises Off, premiered here in 1982, as did Bugsy Malone, which has become a staple of the theatre’s identity. The Lyric is also known for bold reimaginings of classic works, from Emma Rice’s vibrant Wise Children to radical new takes on Shakespeare and Greek tragedies.
