Jez Butterworth’s Jerusalem is all set to return to London’s Apollo Theatre after its initial premiere a decade ago. Since its premiere, the show has been said to be one of the best plays of the 21st century and was ranked as ‘the greatest theatrical work since 2000’ by the Guardian. The play is set on St. George’s Day and follows Johnny Byron who is a local waster and wanted by the local authorities and goons.

Directed by Ian Rickson, Jerusalem stars Mark Rylance, who is reprising his role as Johnny, and Mackenzie Crook, reprising his role as Ginger. Rylance won Olivier Award and a Tony Award for his performance as Johnny and has been seen in several other notable films and theatre productions.

Watch one of the most popular plays of all time come to life with these talented and original stars from the earlier runs. The play would run for 16 weeks only at the Apollo theatre starting from 16th April 2022.

The Story

Jerusalem is a story of a modern English man named Johnny ‘Rooster’ Byron. He gets drunk, shares stories, do drugs, runs from authorities, and has a mixed relationship with everyone he meets. The story begins on the day of St. George when a local county fair is held in the area and Johnny is quite wanted. The county officials want to evict him, the town thug wants to exact revenge on him, his son wants to go to the fair with him, and his crewmates want to party with him. Watch Johnny get bruised and harassed but not beaten down as he stands against the hypocrisy of modern rural life.
