Everybody’s Talking About Jamie is the hot new show in town! And why not! After all, this inspirational musical has bagged 3 Whatsonstage Awards and 5 nominations for the Laurence Olivier Awards.
Everybody’s Talking About Jamie, inspired by real-life character Jamie Campbell, tells us the story of a 16-year old who wishes to become a drag queen. Wanting to bring his story out into the world, he approached Firecracker Films– a documentary film company.
Theatre director Jonathan Butterell came upon the documentary by chance and decided to turn Jamie’s story into a musical. With the help of singer-songwriter Dan Gillespie Sells and writer Tom MacRae, he turned Jamie’s journey of becoming a drag queen into a musical.
The exemplary story of Jamie Campbell gained popularity after the 2011 BBC documentary - Jamie: Drag Queen At 16. Jamie New is just another teenager from Sheffield. However, he doesn’t quite fit in. The musical showcases Jamie, a 16-year old gay teenager who turns to drag in order to overcome bullying and embrace his sexuality. Drawing strength from his mother’s unconditional love and his friend’s unadulterated support, he turns his life around and overcomes prejudices to become a sensation. In essence, Everybody’s Talking About Jamie is a modern-day fairytale of how one 16-year old steps out of the darkness, into the spotlight.
