Why Watch Cock?

  • 'Cock,' which is performed with barely any props and a largely empty set only serves in highlighting each and every minute movement and gesture of the characters. The play is comical and vibrant but has a psychological intensity to it due to its minimalism.
  • The play traces the story of a man who’s been gay so far but happens to fall in love with a woman. This incident sets into motion a debate on sexual identity, love, and labels. The characters beautifully explore these dilemmas and the play poses the question, should we limit ourselves by putting labels?
  • First performed in 2009, Mike Bartlett, the writer of hit shows like King Charles III and The 47th, play Cock is well-known. The play’s content is all the more relevant in today’s times as it reaffirms the dynamic nature of sexual identities and the issue with strict labelling of the same.

The Ambassadors Theatre

The Ambassadors Theatre, which opened in 1913, was designed by architect W. G. R. Sprague. It was built to be a companion to St Martin's Theatre, allowing smaller productions to be staged in a more intimate setting.

Panthea, the first drama to be staged here, was only performed for 15 nights. Following that, Charles B. Cochran became the theatre's manager, and with the introduction of Paris' newest form of entertainment, the 'intimate' revue, he was able to turn the theatre's fortunes around.
