The Royal Avenue Theatre, designed by F.H. Fowler opened in 1882 at Northumberland Avenue in London. The theatre staged numerous productions for 25 years before tragedy hit - the roof of the theatre caved in causing massive destruction and loss of life. The theatre was later rebuilt in 1905, under the name of the Playhouse Theatre. Between 1951 and 1976, the theatre was used as a BBC radio station for recording live broadcast performances.

The external building is made of Portland stone, designed by F.H. Fowler.
After the roof caved in in 1905, the entire theatre underwent a remodel under the instruction of Detmar, Blow & Billerey.
The building's interiors were constructed in a French-Venetian style, with huge foyers and curving walls.

The opening play at the Playhouse Theatre in 1907 was The Drums of Oudh, and Toddles by Tristan Bernard and Andre Godferneaux.
