Oliver! is the jewel in the crown of British musicals, following a plucky young orphan as he dodges deception, abduction, and mistreatment in his quest for a better life—and a new gang of friends. With Dickens' classic tale as its backbone, this toe-tapping adaptation boasts iconic songs like ‘Consider Yourself,’ ‘Food Glorious Food,’ and the tear-jerking ‘As Long As He Needs Me.’ Originally hitting Broadway in 1963, Oliver! won three Tony Awards and ran for an impressive 774 performances. This West End revival stars Simon Lipkin as Fagin, Shanay Holmes as Nancy, and Billy Jenkins as the cheeky Artful Dodger. The show’s no stranger to success, bagging eight Olivier nominations and even earning a spot on a Royal Mail stamp. Nestled on London’s illustrious Shaftesbury Avenue, the Gielgud Theatre first graced the stage in December 1906, originally going by the rather unassuming name of the Hicks Theatre. This architectural gem, designed by the same genius behind the Wyndham Theatre, boasts a fabulous Louis XVI-themed decor that’s fit for royalty—if only the walls could talk! Now owned by Delfont Macintosh Theatres, the Gielgud is famous for hosting shorter performances, proving that good things really do come in petite packages.

The atmosphere in the cosy Gielgud theatre was perfect for Oliver. The cast was incredible. By the end when they were singing "you're one of the family", you really felt that you were. We grew up on this musical and it was so moving to feel like 'part of the family'. The children were 100% present to their characters and were totally believable. The adult cast were the same. We felt particularly lucky to have seen Simon Lipkin as Fagan. You really felt his good heart alongside his younger counterpart who was also fabulous, Aaron Macgregor as the Artful Dodger. Absolutely amazing how perfect each character was in this wonderful production. Wish I could go over and over but we're home in Australia now and can only enjoy our memories.
Seeing Oliver! in London with my wife was an unforgettable experience. The cast was absolutely incredible, but what truly amazed us was how everything came together so perfectly: the staging, the set design, the atmosphere, and the timeless music. I laughed, I cried, and I celebrated along with the characters on stage. I've now returned to Portugal and find myself recommending this show to everyone I know. If you ever have the chance to see Oliver!, do it at least once. It is far more than a musical; it's an experience that stays with you long after the final curtain falls. A memory I will treasure for years to come.
Being from Australia and seeing such a wonderful show. The main actor performance and female actor singing. The children dancing. The voices were amazing. Stage sets were exceptional. I just had a 13 yo child sitting near us that kept getting up, leaving and coming back, and banging their seat each time, without the parent doing anything and it interrupted you enjoying the matinee show. The usher should have said something.
The Performers were all excellent, especially little Oliver in my opinion. The Theatre has a great ambiance as old theatres do. We were up in the gods, so couldnt see everything when they were on the walkway, but we booked late as was a last minute visit to London. Would book lower and closer next time. We LOVED it !!! No Photos sorry as we wernt allowed to take any.
A magnificent performance. Fantastically sung, simply sublime. Here’s a tip to make the experience perfect: the top two tiers are seats where the view of the stage is limited, making the experience less intense. Next time, I’m going for seats on the first balcony 😊
