The libretto was written by actor and impresario Emanuel Schikaneder, who ran the Freihaus-Theatre auf der Wieden, a suburban Vienna theatre with which Mozart had a close association. The cast includes David Stout as Papageno and Norman Reinhardt as Tamino, who is making his ENO debut. They are joined by Soraya Mafi, a previous ENO Harewood Artist, playing the role of Pamina, and Rainelle Krause, a fiery coloratura who is making her ENO debut, and plays the cunning Queen of Night. Erina Yashima is conducting the ENO Chorus and Orchestra for the first time.
Storyline
The action is already underway when the story begins. A gigantic creature is pursuing Tamino, a prince who has been lost in a faraway realm. Three enigmatic women save him, slay the monster, and give Tamino a picture of Pamina, the Night Queen's daughter, who immediately captures his heart. When they inform him that Pamina has been kidnapped by the formidable and evil Sarastro, Tamino makes a promise to find her. Does he succeed in his quest?
