Duke Bluebeard’s Castle tickets are available on sale! The production will be held at the London Coliseum in the city’s West End for a limited run in March 2024. Duke Bluebeard's Castle was written by Béla Bartók. It lasts for roughly an hour and features just two singing characters: Bluebeard and his newest bride Judith, who has recently eloped and is returning to his castle for the first time. The story is based on the French folktale, or conte populaire, as told by Charles Perrault. The one-act Symbolist opera will be conducted by English National Opera’s Director of Music, Martyn Brabbins. Award-winning Welsh soprano Natalya Romaniw performs Judith in this two-person production, while one of today's premier basses, Canadian baritone John Relyea, plays Bluebeard. Observe a marriage disintegrate, as long-kept secrets, haunting memories, and unresolved emotional wounds come to light, unravelling their bond.

Storyline

Judith explores the mysterious castle of her enigmatic husband, Duke Bluebeard. Each closed door conceals a hidden chamber, and as she opens each door, more of his disturbed mind emerges. The first chamber is filled with unfathomable suffering. The one after is an arsenal. A treasure trove full of wealth is hidden behind another, but no amount of money can make him feel any better. She comes across a lovely garden, an oasis of solace, amid the darkness. The journey, however, continues. Judith traipses through the castle until she comes to the seventh and last chamber of mystery, which is the room where her fate lies in wait. What happens next?
